Myopia control (control of children who can't see well

in the distance)  is one of the most exciting research

areas in contact lens research. Potentially it creates a

real opportunity that with some children we can control

the progression of their Myopia and one day even stop it.

As our senior optometrist, Jonathan Walker, is involved

with the contact lens industry, it means we are able to

fit lenses for children with minus prescriptions, and their

prescription is highly unlikely to increase. If you are a parent with a prescription of -6.50 and your little one is getting a prescription of -1.00 (for example), then by prescribing a specific fitted contact lens we are able to ensure when they mature, their dioptre correction will still be around -1.00.

This is a very complex dispensing process and we have currently many juniors at our practice who have seen no change in prescription in over 12 months - some have even noticed improvements with their prescription.

By all means this doesn't mean we don't fit lenses for hyperopics! As we value our patient contact so highly, we often find children have great comfort and parent's minds are at rest throughout their wearing time. We also take extra precautions to ensure their wear and care is beyond adequate. Children are also entitled to an NHS voucher to help fund the cost.
